CDMX

From the 26th April to the 1st May

Welcome to Mexico City, a sprawling metropolis and a continental hub. We can’t wait to discover this city by your side as you’ll find it has an up-all-night energy and culinary scene that make it unique. But CDMX (Ciudad de México) is more than just urban bustle—it’s a collision of contemporary life with ancient history dating back to the Aztecs. That history echoes through everything here, from street food to music to vivid murals, to the warmth of the locals, giving a deeper resonance to daily life. We curated a couple of lists of the best of the best of Mexico City so you can enjoy the city like us! For a complete list of restaurants, hotels, shopping and cultural places, we recommend you download the app Step and check our profile to see even more of our favorite spots around the city.

THINGS TO DO

“Few places conjure Mexico City’s mix of vibrant style, outstanding gastronomy, rich history and bustling street life. Post-pandemic, that blend has gone into overdrive, with new museums featuring the sweep of Mexican art, a panoply of restaurants and bars, and an expanding fashion scene that embraces traditional craft. You can shop for leather bags and ponchos, sample local craft beers and join jazz fans for a concert in a cozy club. Amid the buzz, it’s also worth seeking out the secrets of the Historic Center, where travelers can discover hidden murals, explore an ancient market’s warrens and immerse themselves in the city’s layers and incongruities.” (Link to NYT)

CULTURE

POPULAR ART MUSEUM

NATIONAL ANTROPOLOGY MUSEUM

JUMEX FOUNDATION

This is one of my favorite museums as it embodies Mexico as a whole exhibiting the best parts of the country! It has beautiful works from the different regions of Mexico and to top it off it has a beautiful gift shop full of artisanal artwork and trinkets. I can’t recommend this museum enough.

One of the most important museums of Mexico, the Museum of Anthropology is an extraordinary collection of history. This notable venue houses archeological and anthropologic testimonies, forged by a multiplicity of cultural groups over years of history; it, moreover, pays homage to the indigenous peoples of present-day Mexico through a rich repertory of  practices, representations, expressions, knowledge and traditions which are our country’s intangible heritage and legacy, which belongs to humanity. We recommend getting a guide to explain the museum and show you around as it makes all of the difference and you will truly get the full experience. It’s important to note that MNA is a big museum so go with time!

The Fundación Jumex Arte Contemporáneo was established to foster the production and discussion of contemporary art, diffusing information about it while finding innovative ways to promote art and culture. It accomplishes this through the Colección Jumex, the foundation’s art collection, and the Museo Jumex, a site for the exhibition and activation of contemporary art. The Fundación Jumex furthers its mission through complementary programs: development, directed at supporting contemporary art practice and independent projects; and education, committed to helping visitors understand and appreciate contemporary art.

EXPLORE

BICYCLE.png

Zócalo y Centro Histórico

Walk around the historical center where you can appreciate the National Palace and the Metropolitan Cathedral. Furthermore, you will also find el Palacio de Bellas Artes, a cultural venue that houses temporary and permanent exhibitions of paintings and sculptures.

Bosque de Chapultepec

This beautiful park is composed of more than 1695 acres, which is just over double of Central Park in New York City. It contains 9 museums, a zoo, an amusement park, and a variety of green recreational spaces located near popular commercial districts, making it an invaluable ecological oasis, and a cultural, social, and civic space for the city residents and its visitors. Go and take a walk through the gardens of the forest and finish off by visiting el Castillo de Chapultepec (don’t forget to admire the view of the forest and city and to take incredible pictures with the famous black and white floors).

Paseo de la Reforma

Stroll down the most emblematic avenue of the city. Can’t miss the exhibition of Mexican skulls, painted by various artists that adorn the entire avenue until you reach the famous Angel de la Independencia, a symbol that commemorates the independence of Mexico.

Xochimilco

Just 45 minutes south of downtown Mexico City, you'll find Xochimilco, or the Venice of Mexico. Here, you can float down the canals on traditional trajinera boats or hire a mariachi to serenade you with local music. The canals of Xochimilco are a vestige of the Aztec agricultural technique of using “chinampas” to extend arable land in wetland areas.

Coyoacán: la casa azul de Frida Kahlo + mercado de Coyoacán

Coyoacán (meaning the place of coyotes in Nahuatl) is a beautiful neighborhood in Mexico City where you can explore many museums, cafés, bookstores and markets to uncover the local history. Coyoacán is where Frida Kahlo spent most of her life, having lived in the same house until her death in 1954. This house is known as La Casa Azul.
Make sure to purchase tickets and avoid lines before visiting La Casa Azul at: https://www.boletosfridakahlo.org/#!

Zona Arqueológica de Teotihuacán

At only 50km northeast of Mexico City, you will find the beautiful pyramids of Teotihuacán, one of Mexico’s most visited sites. Built between the 1st and 7th centuries AD, in its time it was one of the largest cities in the Americas, home to at least 25,0000 people. The journey out to the archaeological site only takes about an hour, which can be done using private transportation.

Basílica de Guadalupe.

Mexico’s patron saint, the Virgin of Guadalupe, is believed to have appeared on the site of this church, making it an important pilgrimage site for many Catholics. Don’t miss out on this beautiful experience.

GASTRONOMY

Pierrick and I are both big foodies. Mexico City’s food scene is nothing short of spectacular. With amazing traditional cuisine, to all types of fusion gastronomy, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite places around town so you can check them out and enjoy as much as we do. We recommend sharing plates (family style) as it gives you an opportunity to try as many mouthwatering creations as possible! Fair warning, eating out is very popular so we recommend booking in advance to guarantee checking these places out!

*Contramar:

Delicious seafood restaurant by the super talented chef, Gabriela Camarena. We recommend sharing everything! Don’t forget to order the Tostadas de Atun, pescado a la talla, the tacos estilo ensenada (shrimp or fish), and their famous dessert merengue con fresas.

*Máximo Bistro:

Máximo is without a doubt one of the best places in the city and Pierrick and I’s favorite place. Eduardo changes the menu weekly but it is almost impossible to be let down. We love starting the night with a Bee’s Knees drink or the Negroni The friend chicken is one of our favorite dishes and you simply cannot miss out on the onion gratin.

*Mi Compa Chava:

We recommend getting the chocolata clams as well as the scallops, the taco de botete, and the costra de camarón, and the tower of seafood (señora torres). Make sure to arrive when it opens as the wait time can be up to 3 hours.

*Expendio de Maíz:

You cannot miss out on Expendio de Maíz. There is no set menu. All you have to do is sit down, let the waiter know of any allergies, and the dishes of the day will be brought to you. Their craft is spectacular as they work with local farmers to have the best ingredients and use indigenous corn and other ingredients in their dishes. Their sister restaurant, Parnita is also delicious.

*Madre Café: Madre Café:

Is a great option for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. For lunch or dinner we recommend the serrano ham croquettes, the beet salad, the margarita pizza, and the truffle and mushroom mac & cheese.

*Carmela y Sal:

We love Carmela y Sal because most dishes are modern twists on Mexican classics. We recommend ordering a lot of the plates and sharing everything! You can’t miss out on the Sope de Chicharron, the queso ahumado, the tostadas, and the best esquite!

We recommend getting a ribeye con queso en tortilla de harina (ribeye taco with cheese on a wheat tortilla), nopales (cactus), chicharrón de queso, and the gringa tacos (with everything!). This all pairs amazingly with the agua de jamaica (hibiscus water) or a local artisanal beer! Don’t forget to order a side of avocado to add to the tacos, slather with salsa and enjoy!
